Community Hero Rewarded with Free Roof and Installation from Kanga Roof
How do you reward a community member who sacrifices so much to keep us safe? Sometimes, it’s a challenge to give thanks when thank you seems so hollow or empty. Instead, thank you comes in the form of giving back to those who may have a hard time accepting the appreciation.
Kanga Roof recently awarded a member of the Poconos community with a free roof and installation after decades of active community involvement, a willingness to help others, and their dogged desire to protect their neighbors. Let’s share his story.
What You Need to Know about Rick Dunlap
For over 40 years, Rick Dunlap has lived and worked by the code of a firefighter – a code that has become the very fabric of his life. As a firefighter, he understands the danger that comes with every call into the Barrett Township Fire Department. Instead of worrying about coming home that night, he shifts into action to help when seconds count. From small fires to tremendous blazes, Dunlap is always ready to help those affected by fires, emergencies, or even the simple moments.
These days, Dunlap has been a member of the Barrett Township Fire Department’s volunteer corps for 16 years. While it’s volunteer work, it still allows Dunlap to express his love for helping others – a passion that his neighbors all say is apparent whenever he shows up to lend a helping hand.
While Dunlap has safely returned to his home more times than he can count, it’s the little things that have piled up over the years – including the roof on his home in the Poconos. Without saying much, Dunlap’s roof had seen better days.
So what do you get for the guy who does everything for everyone else? Well, if you’re us at Kanga Roof, then you know the perfect gift.
Kanga Roof Leaps into Action
For approximately 20 years, Kanga Roof has awarded worthy veterans through our Kanga Roof Gives Back program. Dozens of veterans have received necessary work done on their homes, free of charge, by the company dedicated to giving back to those who never expect it.
When we heard about Dunlap and his work in the Poconos, the choice was clear. That’s why we jumped into action on Aug. 14, 2026. Our team arrived at Dunlap’s home and got to work on installing a new roof on his property.
We gave Dunlap the whole Kanga Roof experience so he wouldn’t need to worry about his roof and property for the foreseeable future. We started with removing his old roof so we could work from a clean slate. From there, we installed a new underlayment, proper ice and water protection, and all the necessary flashing and drip edge work to ensure moisture damage would never be a problem for Dunlap.
Of course, we weren’t done yet. Dunlap got new roof vents and ventilation along with pipe boots so his home could more easily breathe during the more humid months of the year. Then, of course, we added a new system of shingles to his home and cleaned everything up so it was like we were never there.
